Head of Research Nico Teuschler in Interview
Corporate,Science, TLL LongevityLabsWe spoke with our Head of Research, Nico Teuschler, about his work on spermidine research:
What are the latest exciting developments and discoveries? How does he approach his work? And what is his personal favorite spermidineLIFE® product?
Find out all of this in the interview below.
Which research areas are currently most interesting when it comes to spermidine? Where is the greatest momentum?
The most exciting trend right now is clearly in the area of longevity, or healthy lifespan extension. Spermidine is receiving special attention due to its role in autophagy – a cellular cleaning process that naturally declines with age.
Current research is exploring how spermidine could help counteract age-related diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular issues, and age-related immune decline.
What are your top 3 research fields where studies are currently being published or exciting developments are happening?
-
Cognition and neuroprotection:
Numerous studies are investigating the effects of spermidine on the brain, for example in cases of Alzheimer’s or age-related memory decline. -
Immunosenescence (immune aging):
Research is exploring how spermidine may strengthen the aging immune system, including the reactivation of T cells. -
Mitochondrial health:
Spermidine has shown promising effects on the performance and regeneration of mitochondria – the "powerhouses" of the cell – which are essential for energy production, metabolism, and healthy aging.
Additionally, there is a growing research interest in:
-
Sleep and depression:
Although still emerging, early studies suggest spermidine may have positive effects on sleep-wake cycles and depressive symptoms, potentially due to its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective mechanisms.
Where do you find the latest scientific insights on spermidine?
I primarily use scientific databases like PubMed, where new studies on spermidine are published regularly. Anyone interested can simply search for the term "spermidine" there and get a good overview of the latest publications.
Google Scholar and ResearchGate are also useful tools for staying up to date.
What’s your favorite product in the Longevity Labs+ lineup?
One of my personal favorites is definitely nadLIFE® Energy+.
It combines NAM (nicotinamide) – a precursor of NAD⁺, a key molecule for cellular metabolism and energy production – with spermidine, which helps to clear out damaged mitochondria.
This combination specifically supports cellular energy processes and autophagy – two essential mechanisms in longevity research.
Thank you, Nico, for this very insightful interview.
We’re excited to see what the future holds in the fascinating field of spermidine research.
