Dr. Lars-Peter Kamolz: New member of our Scientific Advisory Board

Once again we are happy to gain a new member for our Scientific Advisory Board. Also once again, this is a person who is not only one of the true greats of plastic and reconstructive surgery but also someone dealing extensively with regenerative medicine and healthy aging. That is why it is our honor to welcome him among the members of our Scientific Advisory Board. May we introduce: Prof. Dr. Lars-Peter Kamolz, MSc.

University professor Dr. Lars-Peter Kamolz was born in 1972 and began studying medicine in the year 1990 at the University of Vienna. He completed his residency at the Institute for Anatomy III before joining the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Vienna General Hospital in 1999. He also directed the Center for Severe Burn Injuries there from 2007 to 2010.

Accordingly, one of his main scientific interests is also burn injury treatment and tissue engineering, which is the artificial production of skin and fat tissue for reconstructive operations. Shortly after that, he was given responsibility for the Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at the Wiener Neustadt Regional Hospital and as a consultant for the Baden, Mödling, and Neunkirchen Regional Hospitals.

And what then?

So much on his extraordinarily impressive background. But of course, that’s not enough. Now, Prof. Dr. Kamolz heads the Department of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical University of Graz. Furthermore, he is also the director of COREMED (Cooperative Center for Regenerative Medicine) and head of the “Research Unit for Safety in Health”.

We are proud to welcome a person to our Scientific Advisory Board that not only brings with him so much experience and scientific knowledge but also contributes significantly to improving the quality of life of so many people – this is something that is also very close to our hearts.

Regenerative, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgery is in fact primarily devoted to restoring original function to impaired bodily functions. It does not matter if the impairment is caused by burns, accidents, or degenerative disorders.

This also involves reconstructing the finest nerves and vessels and using plastic surgery to make skin, muscles, and even tendons or bones (more) functional again. Approximately 3,000 operations are performed annually at the LKH-Uniklinikum in Graz, thus returning people to a more normal life.

Great potential for healthier aging

Healthy aging of course plays a significant role in all this. As our society becomes progressively older, the risk of degenerative and chronic illness also increases.

Prof. Dr. Kamolz emphasizes that oftentimes only the symptoms of such disorders are treated, as curing the cause is frequently not feasible with conventional methods. Regenerative medicine, however, supports the body in restoring normal function to tissue and organs by healing or replacing damaged tissue. This assists in the body’s own regenerative capabilities and creates a new approach to the treatment of various illnesses.

Prof. Dr. Kamolz is not only responsible for the publication of a multitude of studies, but also plays a large part in the research of regenerative, reconstructive, and plastic options. He has already been awarded many accolades for his research and his work.

That is why it is our great honor to welcome him to our Scientific Advisory Board. We are looking forward to integrating exciting new perspectives on healthy aging into our own work and continuously advancing our research together.
