The skin does not forget
Summer. Sun. Sunburn. Unfortunately, a bad combination that can cause lasting damage to our skin. So here's a little reminder from us today about what our skin needs in the sun.
Sunburn damages our skin permanently. Our parents have already drilled this into our heads. But why and what is the reason? Generally, the damage to the skin is triggered by the different ultraviolet radiation components (UV radiation) of sunlight. The short-wave UV-B radiation damages our cells in the epidermis (upper skin) and triggers inflammation in the underlying skin layer (dermis). The result: we get sunburn!
A sunburn is therefore nothing more than a burn or inflammation of the skin. In the process, the blood vessels dilate and reddening and swelling of the skin occur. The short-term consequences are itching and burning or even blistering.
But the real problem is the long-term effects. Our skin does not forget a single sunburn! The long-wave UV-A rays penetrate deep into the skin and cause damage to the genetic material (DNA). The result: our skin ages before its time. It forms more wrinkles and pigment spots.
So should we rather not go out in the sun? No! Sun is important for us and our body. It boosts our metabolism and causes vitamin D to be formed. This happy vitamin makes us feel better and ensures strong bones and better teeth.
The solution to the riddle is, as so often, the right dosage and preparation. If we follow these 5 tips nothing will stand in the way of a sunny summer:
- Sunscreen, suntan oil and co.
In general, there is the right product for every skin type. Whether moisturizing sun gels, emulsions and oil-free sprays for oily, oily skin, lipid and moisturizers for dry skin or rich sun creams or sun oils for sensitive skin - you can find all varieties in the pharmacy. Apply 30 minutes before sunbathing and let it absorb well!
- The skin type reveals how long we can stand it in the sun.
Fair, blond types should only go out in the sun for 10 to 15 minutes without protection. Mediterranean skin types, on the other hand, can tolerate up to 45 minutes in the sun. Regardless of skin type, the following applies: avoid the sun during the strongest sunlight between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., otherwise apply sufficient sunscreen.
- The right companions prevent sunburns.
Not only creams offer us good protection from the sun's rays, but also clothing. A t-shirt to throw on and a sun hat, protect our skin from extra exposure. Our eyes are also grateful for a little precaution. A stylish pair of sunglasses should therefore not be missing from your summer outfit.
- Aftercare is just as important as precaution.
To prevent the skin from drying out, it is advisable to use a rich skin care product after sunbathing. This includes after-sun products - also available for every skin type - or aloe vera gels. But we can also help from the inside out: Water boosts the skin's metabolism and influences the skin's state of tension and blood circulation, as we in this article have already reported in our blog.
- The emergency plan.
If, despite all precautions, a sunburn still occurs, the plan is to react immediately: Get out of the sun and cool the skin with an aloe vera gel! Those who like it down-to-earth can also fall back on old home remedies such as curd and yogurt. Simply apply, let it work in and after washing it off, apply a cooling skin care cream.
