Fasting for inner balance
Based on decades of experience, Marienkron is a place for fasting, for physical relaxation and the strengthening of body, mind and soul. As a nutritionist at Marienkron, Christina Karner knows the answers to all questions about fasting.
By consciously reducing to the essentials, a fasting cure ensures a good gut feeling, an inner balance. This strengthens the immune system and body and mind can regain strength.
Why is fasting recommended for health?
Fasting has an effect on both the body and the mind. Fasting involves deliberately abstaining from certain foods for a certain period of time while reducing daily calorie intake. During fasting, our body switches to fat metabolism, which results in the formation of ketone bodies. These ketone bodies then serve as energy suppliers, but also have an anti-inflammatory effect. People with diseases such as rheumatism or arthritis benefit from this effect in particular. Scientific studies give also reference to the fact that fasting has a positive influence on blood sugar and blood pressure. Of course, these metabolic parameters cannot be positively influenced in the long term by fasting alone, but in combination with a change in diet and exercise in everyday life.
Due to the reduction to the essentials, fasting also has a mentally relieving effect. In addition, we see with many of our guests a mood-lifting effect - some describe it also as "fasting high" after the first metabolic change.
What forms of fasting are there?
There is "lifestyle fasting", which includes both religious fasting and fasting for conscious physical cleansing. And there are therapeutic fasting cures, which can be implemented from 10 - 21 days - however, we strongly recommend medical supervision.
In Marienkron fasting cures are offered from 7 to 21 days with three different fasting forms offered: Vegetable, soup and juice fasting. The fasting forms differ in the energy content and in the dosage form of the food. The mildest fasting form is the vegetable fasting with approx. 620 calories/day. This combines fasting soups, fasting crackers for chewing, a daily plate of steamed vegetables, potatoes or cereals, and even a baked apple in the evening.
Soup and juice fasting involves no solid food and a maximum daily intake of approx. 230 - 250 kcal. Soup fasting includes clear and puree vegetable soups and cereal porridge. Juice fasting - the strictest form of fasting - involves taking fruit and vegetable juices by the spoonful.
The zero fasting or water fasting contains high health risks and is strongly discouraged. The extreme restriction of calorie and nutrient intake can lead to muscle breakdown and villous atrophy in the intestines, among other things.
Does fasting continue to have an effect on everyday life after the fasting cure?
Many of our guests benefit from the regular eating rhythm during the fasting cure in Marienkron, the "eating at rest" and having enough time for food intake. Especially in the stressful professional everyday life we often pay too little attention to food - in many cases we snack our way through the day or eat with distraction - through the cell phone, in front of the PC or in front of the TV. The reduced quantity and slow eating also help us to better perceive the feeling of hunger and fullness. It is then important to listen to these signals in everyday life at home. Fasting can therefore also provide an impulse for a healthy lifestyle in everyday life afterwards through the short-term reduction and clear rhythmization.
